OpenBook 3.2 was released tonight. The previous post described its new features. One new change I would like to highlight is the addition of a “Pay it Forward for Literacy” button on the OpenBook settings page.
OpenBook is an open source plugin, free for anyone’s use. I have volunteered countless hours to its production and maintenance. Sometimes open source developers add a button to donate to their ongoing costs. That makes sense. In my case, I feel I have already benefited in many unexpected ways. One of the payoffs to me is that OpenBook is often used to promote literacy, a cause I care about. I am particularly concerned about literacy among boys these days. To that end, if you feel you would like to make a donation I ask you to make a donation to a cause that advances literacy.
If you click the new button on the settings page it will take you to a new page on the OpenBook support wiki, “Pay it Forward for Literacy.” On that page I recommend supporting the literary website, Via Negativa. Dave Bonta is a poet and editor from Pennsylvania. He maintains four excellent sites that I have followed for years. He is also a writer and editor of Qarrtsiluni, a literary magazine. Countless volunteer hours have generated an enthusiastic following. You can support hosting and domain registration costs and keep these great literary sites going.
I kindly thank you.
